Bolton day of unity in the face of EDL march

Thousands of anti-fascist protesters are expected in Bolton tomorrow to counter demonstrate the English Defence Leagues anti-Muslim march.

Formed in 2009, with close links to the BNP, the EDL claim that they are remonstrating against Muslim extremism and are not racist or violent. However, other marches have witnessed them raising Nazi salutes, chanting racist slogans such as  ‘Get Muslims off our streets’ and ‘Pakis go home’, rioting and assaults on local people.

Indeed, a promo video for Saturdays march on their website states: ‘And so from the people of Britain to the entire Islamic population within these Isles, we would like to say FUCK OFF, you are no longer welcome in Britain’. No equivocation there then.

A spokesperson for Unite Against Fascism said: ’It’s obvious that by Muslim extremists the EDL mean anyone who they think is Muslim, or has a dark skin or is an immigrant. We are witnessing the upsurge of the biggest fascist street movement since the 1970’s. If we don’t stand up to them, we’ll be back to the days when the National Front would roam the streets, attacking with impunity’.

Anti-fascist demonstrators will meet at 11am at Bolton’s Victoria Square.http://www.uaf.org.uk/news.asp?choice=100306
